2023 Freshers

COMPETE IN BLACK & GOLD

We compete against other universities around the country in the BULSCA league and in the annual National Student Championships.

Hello Freshers!

Firstly, congratulations on your exam results and getting a place at the University of Sheffield! We know you're going to love it here. Going to university is a great opportunity to get involved in all kinds of activities and meet lots of different people - and what better way to do this than by joining a sports club?

What is lifesaving? Lifesaving is a competitive sport! Lifesaving was first started to encourage lifeguards to develop the physical and mental skills required to save lives. It covers the act of rescue, resuscitation and first aid.

At university, we compete in the British Universities Lifesaving Clubs Association league - teams of 4 are led by a captain through two simulated emergency response events, followed by a rope throw relay and two swimming races. For more information on lifesaving sport, visit the BULSCA site.

We also compete in various Speed Championships around the country, which consist of many individual and relay swimming  races with an added lifesaving twist! Come and try out all the different skills - from swimming with fins and a manikin, to obstacle swimming (our version of hurdles in athletics).

Lifesaving is such a varied sport that there really is something for everyone - whether you're an excellent swimmer looking for more diverse competitions, you're a quick-thinking leader who'd make a great captain, or you're a complete beginner looking for a new hobby and to earn some qualifications.

How do I get involved? We're holding free taster sessions throughout Week 1 in September with dates TBC:

More details on these events will be available on our social medias.

What's lifesaving like at Sheffield? With around 15 members, we're one of the smaller sports clubs here at Sheffield - but that doesn't stop us from sending teams to every BULSCA competition and achieving some great results. In 2015, 2016 and 2018 we achieved overall 3rd place at the National Student Championships. We've held multiple BULSCA Championship titles and records over the years, as well as Freshers League 1st place in 2015 and 2019.

We train 2 times per week; with 1 session in the University pool and 1 dry-side first aid session. Our pool sessions vary from week to week and cover everything from fitness and stroke technique, to rescuing casualties and practicing rope throw. Dry training involves training first aid and CPR.

How can I find out more? We'll be at the Sports Fair this September and around the SU throughout Intro Week, so come and chat to us - we'll be with the bright orange manikin. But if you're unlucky enough to miss us, don't worry! You can contact us using the details below, or just turn up to any of our taster sessions.

For more information on lifesaving, how to join the club, or to just say hello, the best way to contact us is through Facebook messenger, joining our group, or by emailing lifesaving@sheffield.ac.uk

See you in September!

Lifesaving love,

The Committee
