After a successful Sports Fair and a great turn out at our three Give it a Go sessions, we are extremely happy with the progress our club has made! Our fresher intake has been amazing this year, so much so that over 50% of the club now comprises of people who are new to lifesaving. We are excited to see our new members grow, learn new rescue skills and develop in the world of competitive lifesaving.

Training

This year we are lucky enough to have almost doubled our training time and training space. With more and more people turning up to training, we hope that this consistency and increase in training will reflect positively in our competition results!

Socials

Inclusive socials are very important to the club, as it allows us to get to know our new members. The annual Freshers' Baywatch socials and Halloween socials to ROAR have yet again been popular! Everyone had such a good time and we can't wait for more social opportunities.

Yorkshire Speeds Lifesaving Championships

On Saturday 6th October, we took a group of 6 experienced lifesavers to Yorkshire Speeds. This was the first time our club has attended this event. Despite it still being pre-season for us, we still came away with some great results! Here are the notable achievements from that day:

Sarah Falconer:

- Silver medal in 200m Obstacle Swim

- 4th place in 200m Super Lifesaver & PB

- 8th place in 50m Freestyle

King Yee Cheung:

- 12.5m Rope Throw PB

- 50m Manikin Carry PB

- 200m Super Lifesaver PB

- 50m Freestyle long course PB

Daniel Jensen:

- 200m Obstacle Swim PB

Peter Woodmancy:

- 200m Obstacle Swim PB

- 100m Manikin Carry PB

Also a massive well done to Ben Prime and Jonathan Hancock for performing superbly in the 12.5m Rope Throw!

Sheffield vs. Nottingham Lifesaving Varsity 2018

For the first time ever, the University of Sheffield and University of Nottingham Lifesaving Clubs organised a mini friendly varsity competition which took place on Saturday 28th October. Our amazing fresher intake meant we were able to bring four teams with us to Nottingham, each comprised of at least 2 or 3 people who were new to the sport. Despite Nottingham being the overall winners of the competition, our four teams still performed very well in all events. Well done to the Sheffield Sharks, Seahorses, Seals and Sworfishes! Not only was this a good experience for everyone involved, it was lovely to bond with our friends at Nottingham. #BlackAndGold #GreenAndGold

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lifesaving Club raised money for CoppaFeel by entering the Uni Boob photo competition. This is a great cause and we encourage everyone to get involved!

World Week 2018 #WeAreInternational

21st-28th October marked World Week. This is a celebration of all 7,000 international students here at the University of Sheffield. To support this campaign, Lifesaving Club filmed a short video showcasing the diversity and inclusivity within our club. This video was chosen by the SU Sports Officer and International Officer as the winning video! You can watch it below:

Read what Seri Park, an exchange student from South Korea had to say about why she decided to join Lifesaving:

"I am an exchange student from South Korea, and I always wanted to participate in a society and feel a bond in a group together. [...] I thought one of the best way to get along was to join a sports club, so I browsed through every society during the Sports Fair in Fresher's week. Then, the Lifesaving club caught my eye [...]

First of all I knew 'lifesaving' as a job, not as a sport, which was so special and unique. I like swimming and I like to compete, so I thought it would be perfect for me. Second, the captain of the club is an Asian woman, which was unusual compared to other societies. I, as an Asian woman (whose mother tongue is not English), know how hard it is to become a captain among white British people [...] I could feel that in this society, no one will discriminate or treat unfairly, and I could tell that everyone would be so openminded. And actually, it was!

Even though this club has only a few members, I always feel welcomed and comfortable whenever I come to training. That is the reason why I love to come to every training three times a week. [...]

All people in this society are really caring and always welcome each other. If we find differences derived from different cultures, we don't think of them as a 'weird thing', but rather as an interesting thing and accept as the way it is. I hope this kind of spirit and culture can be spread to all the societies in the University of Sheffield. We are international!"

Sponsorship and New Equipment

The University of Sheffield Lifesaving Club are proud to announce our sponsorship with Henry Boot Construction. We have received a kind donation of £500 to help us purchase new fins and first aid equipment to further develop our training and competition skills. Keep updated on our website to see how this generosity has helped us!

October has proven to be a successful start to the academic year for Lifesaving Club. With a busy November coming up, keep your eyes peeled on this page to hear how RLSS Club SERC Nationals, Bristol Freshers' Competition and hosting our own BULSCA League Competition went!

Until then...
