The last few weeks of the semester have been hectic for the University of Sheffield Lifesaving Club to say the least - nonetheless, it has been an amazingly successful two months. Here is a round up of what we got up to...

RLSS UK National Lifesaving Championships

On Saturday 3rd November, Ellie, Jonathan, King Yee and Peter travelled to Leeds for RLSS UK Nationals. We competed in the Club SERC event with no prior preparation or training as a team of four. This was a new experience for most of us, as it differed from usual BULSCA SERCs quite a lot! Despite our lack of experience in this event, it was still very interesting and full of fun for us - we were extremely happy to have placed 11th overall in the country! Additionally, thank you to Seri and Rosy who kindly joined us to volunteer on the day.

Earlier that same day, our former Club Captain Sarah Falconer represented Wales in the Ladies category in the National Championships. This consisted of an Aquatic initiative, Life Support initiative, Rope Throw and Swim & Tow. She performed superbly in every event especially in the Swim & Tow race and was crowned National Champion! Congratulations to Sarah.

Bristol Freshers' Competition

To kick off the BULSCA league, Bristol hosted the annual Freshers' Competition on Saturday 10th November! Despite it being a very long journey, we were ready to compete and see some familiar BULSCA faces again (after 6 long months)!

A team (Jonathan, Ellie, King Yee and Megan) - 3rd in the dry SERC and 5th in the wet SERC. These were some of the best SERC results our club has seen in the past few years! A team placed 7th overall.

B team/Freshers team (Michael, Helena, Katie and Rosy) - it was Helena, Katie and Rosy's first ever BULSCA lifesaving competition, with Michael there to guide them as their team captain. They placed 11th overall with an amazing result in the wet SERC. Additionally, they completely smashed the Freshers' League by winning the gold medal!

C team (Dan, Iuliia, Peter and Seri) - Seri and Iuliia's first competition! The team placed 24th overall with some great SERC captaincy and performances. Well done to everyone who took part!

Brovember

Lifesaving Club attended the Brovember Wellbeing Cafe on Monday 12th November. This was a campaign to promote Men's Mental Health and we were proud to take part!

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification Course

Alongside King Edwards Swimming Pool, we organised a 40-hour NPLQ course especially for students. They ran every Wednesday and Sunday evening for 5 weeks to split up the hours of the course. This made the course more accessible for students with a busy daytime timetable. All 6 of the students passed and are now fully qualified lifeguards! Congratulations. This was just another way our club promotes the message of drowning prevention. Thank you to Jason from King Edwards Swimming Pool for all his hard work.

Sheffield Competition

After months and months of hard work and preparation, the time finally arrived... We hosted our own BULSCA league competition on Saturday 24th November! This was Sheffield's third home competition and it ran smoothly with perfect timing! 24 teams (96 competitors) attended on the day to compete in the Dry SERC, Wet SERC, Rope Throw, Medley Relay and Swim & Tow (in a 33m pool)! Congratulations to Loughborough A who were the overall winners on the day. To celebrate the successes of the day, we headed to Raynor Lounge for our Under the Sea themed social, and then Pop Tarts - a great night for everybody!

Birmingham Competition

On Saturday 8th December, we travelled to the new University of Birmingham swimming pool for the last BULSCA league competition of 2018. Our highlights for the day were Sheffield A coming 2nd in their heat for Swim & Tow, and Sheffield B placing 2nd overall in the dry SERC - well done to everyone who took part!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

To celebrate a wonderful term, Lifesaving Club hosted the annual Lifesaving Christmas Games - massive well done to Nick, Luciana and Iuliia who were the overall games winners. To finish the year off, we attended a Christmas meal at The Ball. We look forward to seeing old faces and new at our training sessions next semester! Until then, have a great new year and good luck for your exams! See you all in 2019.

Lifesaving Love x
