Sports Awards & End of Year Meal - May Round Up!

Sports Awards

As the sporting season and the academic year draws to a close, there was no better way to reflect and celebrate our achievements than attending the Sports Awards. It was a wonderful night in great company, with Lifesaving Club and its members up for 3 awards.

Our tireless hard work, fundraising and volunteering throughout Community Week got us shortlisted for the Fundraising Initiative Award. This was one of six club awards and is awarded to the club who have put the most work into raising money and awareness for charitable and essential awareness campaigns. This was the second time that we'd been shortlisted for a club award following last year's success with the Most Improved Club award! We had our fingers crossed as we knew we were up against two very deserving clubs!

Furthermore, following in the footsteps of the club co-founders Helen and Michael, Megan and King Yee were 2 of 84 people nominated for the prestigious Black & Gold Awards. These awards are a celebration of the culmination of people’s sporting careers at the University of Sheffield. This is the highest achievement a member can gain and as such the winners will be awarded with Sport Sheffield Colours. The awards are presented to 32 individuals who go above and beyond the average player in aid of their club for the duration of their university playing career both on and off the field. They should stand out in their club as the most committed member to their sport and the wider black and gold community.

Moment of truth...

WE WON ALL 3 AWARDS!!!!

We could not be happier that we won all the awards we were shortlisted for. It came as a huge shock because we were up against lots of worthy individuals and clubs! We all had such a great night anyway, but winning the awards (along with BULSCA Club of the Year) were the cherries on top of the cake.

Well done to everyone who took part and volunteered in Community Week, and thank you to everyone who supported us! We would not have been able to win the Fundraising Initiative Award if it wasn't for you. Finally congratulations to Megan Valk (Speeds Training Officer & Kit Officer 2018-19) and King Yee Cheung (Speeds Training Officer & Publicity Officer 2017-18, Club Captain & Publicity Officer 2018-19), whose dedication made Lifesaving Club successful this year. We have no doubt that next year's club members will win many more awards!

Performance Sport

Back in April, Ellie and King Yee presented to the Sport Sheffield Performance Sport team in the hopes that we can get extra support so that club members reach their full potentials performance-wise. We pitched about our future club development plans and goals. Our presentation went extremely well and the team seemed very impressed with our club achievements and aspirations!

Unfortunately we were not awarded full 'Performance Club' status, however they would still like to offer us help, stating that it would be a waste not to invest in us! This help comes in the form of coached strength and conditioning drop-in sessions starting in September, and potential workshops on sport psychology, nutrition, and how-to-prepare-for-competitions! This was extremely good news for the club, as we have never had this level of support before. We fully believe this would be the extra push we needed to meet our full potentials and would be crucial for the development of the club. We can't wait to start these sessions, and we'll be sure to update you all!

End of Year Meal

The time of year has come to gather for one last meal as a club, and to say our goodbyes to the members who are departing from Sheffield. It was a joyous last celebration with delicious food and awards for everyone! Thank you Ellie, who organised a lovely evening.

Good luck to everyone moving on to new journeys and adventures!

This will be the last of our Lifesaving Monthly Round-up blog posts for this academic year! We hope you've enjoyed reading our updates and thank you for following us every single step of the way.

Until September...

Lifesaving Love x
